Archive for April, 2010

Most people consider Nebraska to be flat, barren prairieland. Sure, we have trees. We even have a National Forest at Halsey, in the midst of Nebraska’s Sandhills. Celebrate Nebraska’s Arbor Day with a glimpse of the history of the national celebration and a look at top trees in the Cornhusker State.  It’s new on the Nebraska-isms page.

This week, I take a look at Nebraska’s tornado history and what it is like to live in tornado alley. Follow the link below or peruse all Nebraskaisms columns on the Nebraskaisms page.

Lots of exciting writing assignments published over the weekend, in addition to a surprise.

Learned on Sunday that I placed second in Feature Series in the Nebraska Press Association awards. The three-article series ran in the Norfolk Daily News in December and featured the dilemma dairy farmers across the U.S. and Nebraska faced during the dairy pricing crisis. What a great surprise!

I posted the latest Nebraska-isms column. This week, I discuss Nebraska’s bowling history, including the only sanctioned 900 series and the Nebraska Women’s Bowling team’s quest for a national championship. Click on the Nebraska-isms page and scroll down to the April 15 column.

Over at WOW! Women on Writing, I posted a helpful guide about submitting e-mail queries and avoiding the filter on The Muffin, the website’s daily writing blog. If you submit queries via e-mail, you’ll want to read this.

And I landed a new gig at Examiner.com as an American Food Examiner. My first article, paying homage to National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Month, is available for perusal. I added a recipe for a gourmet grilled cheese, too.  Bon appetit!

This week’s Nebraska-isms column features classic and contemporary Nebraska poets, in honor of National Poetry Month. You’ll find the PDF file on the Nebraska-isms page. Enjoy!

Oh, DWTS fans. I realize Buzz may not be the swiftest of dancers. But I do agree with Len – again – I thought voters would respect his dedication to our country enough to keep him dancing. Instead, I-have-no-personality Kate Gosslin will be back next week. Sigh.

My parents and I still disagree about who we like. I enjoy Chad, because I think he has the talent; he just hasn’t shown 100 % yet. And there’s something fun about Niecy. Honestly, I don’t mind any of them, except Kate.  No dance musicality. No rhythm. No storytelling.

Who is the dark horse?  I think Pamela.  Wouldn’t that be a hoot!
